A successful pre-screen is only the first stage of the qualification process. Because the job we do is highly sensitive, and jobs may involve national security, and military maritime law enforcement, the Coast Guard is a highly selective service. Many qualified applicants compete for limited positions. Due to increasingly high accession standards, fully qualified applicants are not guaranteed accession into the Coast Guard. Obtaining a position in this service is a very competitive process that considers applicant “Whole Person” qualities and strengths, along with service-wide needs. Only the most fully qualified applicants will be offered a Coast Guard position.
Applicants must meet the following criteria and successfully pass several screening tests:
- Be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien.
- You must be between 17-31 (If you are 17, you’ll need parental consent.) though some reserve and officer programs allow you to be older.
- Reservists must be between 17-39.
- Prior-service personnel should contact their local recruiter for specific criteria.
- Have a high school diploma. GEDs are accepted in very rare circumstances.
- Have no more than two dependents (spouse, children, or someone dependent upon you for support).
- Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.
- Be medically cleared by the local Military Entrance Processing Station.
- Undergo a credit check, security clearance check, and a criminal record review. (2nd and 3rd degree misdemeanors and or felony convictions are disqualifying.)
During this screening process, information may reveal an applicant to be unsuitable for Coast Guard service due to excessive debt, medical disqualifications, criminal history, or other reasons.
