Basic Qualifications

Fixed term adjunct faculty should have a terminal degree. Required: (1) Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely-related field. (2) Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate philosophy courses, including applied ethics.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: (1) Ability to teach undergraduate courses in any of the following areas of departmental need: Political Philosophy; Early Modern; Bioethics; Neuroethics; Environmental Philosophy; Environmental Ethics; Ethics in Science, Technology and/or Engineering; Philosophy of Race; Buddhist, Indian or other area of non-Western Philosophy, or Indian Philosophy; 20th Century Continental. (2) Experience teaching introductory critical thinking and/or writing courses.

Experience working with people of diverse cultures and identities, and potential to contribute to one or more departmental, college, or university priorities will be especially valued. Applicants should be aware and supportive of Jesuit educational philosophy, the social justice mission of the university, and the mission of the Department of Philosophy at Santa Clara University.


1. Teaching (95%)
a. Teach courses a assigned. Teaching a course typically includes developing syllabi, assignments, readings, and course schedule before the course begins; developing appropriate teaching preparations for each class meeting; selecting course materials and ordering books; conducting and appearing on-time for all scheduled class meetings; submitting course grades by quarterly deadlines; and administering all required course evaluations (numerical and narrative).
b. Service (5%)
a. Service at the department, College, and University levels including: attending faculty meetings or other appropriate department gatherings and participating constructively; serving on committees; participating in student recruitment and retention activities as deemed appropriate by the department chair or department culture; participating in professional organizations and activities; and performing community service in virtue of their professional expertise and association with the University. (Faculty Handbook, Ch. 1, Protocols, p. 24.

Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Planning and teaching at least one course per quarter as assigned over the three quarters of the academic year in a manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively. Courses that are approved for the University Core must be taught from an approved syllabus. The successful candidate may use a previously-approved syllabus or may work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for timely submission to the relevant University Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
2. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:
a. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared way;
b. Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students;
c. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;
d. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline;
e. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;
f. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
