San Diego Zoo is providing entertainment since 1916 and offers friendly and fun work environments. The zoo mostly offers part time summer and landscaping jobs but it also offers full time careers. Since associates work with animals, applicants must have relevant educational backgrounds and experience. Individuals can find positions as guest services associates, horticulturists, science and research specialists, operations and facilities personnel, business and operational support employees. Also the zoo has basic entry level positions that do not require any experience.
Positions and Wages
Zoo is mostly working through summer and spring but it also offers long term jobs. Some positions are listed below:
Education Program Aide – Education program aides help educators by handling side tasks. They prepare materials for education, serve food and beverages and lead zoo tours. Associates may sometimes work nights during sleepover programs. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift 50 pounds, to drive advanced electric cart, have drivers license and be reliable. Since the job contains working closely with children, associates must take pre-employment background checks. Education program aides earn 9 to 10 dollars.
Security Officer – Security officers are responsible of the security of children, visitors, employees and animals stands paramount. They patrol the park, greet and help guests by answering their questions, follow safety and security policies, take complains and write reports. Applicants must have at least 2 years of security, military or law related experience, be able to legally operate firearms, have valid guard cards, pepper spray permits, valid California driver’s licenses and must complete CPR certifications within two weeks of hire. Also before getting employment, applicants receive background and driving tests.
Zookeeper – Zookeepers are responsible of animals. They feed, train and take care of specific animals. Accordingly to the zoo program, zookeepers may have additional duties as well. Applicants must have bachelor’s degrees in biological fields as well as at least two years of experience working with specified animal groups and knowledge of animal husbandry; mammal management, positive reinforcement operant conditioning techniques and care, feeding, and handling procedures for exotic creatures. The work environment may contain slippery surfaces, heights, cramped spaces and the job can be risky since associates may get zoonotic diseases in addition to the hazards inherent in handling wild animals.
