The Materials Group within the Energy Storage Theme of the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Materials Scientist to contribute to research programs in the area of next-generation energy storage materials. The goal of these programs will be aimed at advancing next-generation technologies through a detailed understanding of degradation mechanisms that limit state-of-the-art materials, as well as the design, synthesis, characterization, and testing of new materials. The successful candidate will aid in the design of novel materials and develop processing methods for the synthesis thereof; understand the physical and electrochemical properties of new materials through the design, planning, and execution of ex situ and operando studies using advanced characterization techniques; fabricate and test battery electrodes and cells to evaluate materials performance; and use knowledge gained to propose possible improvements in materials design and synthesis. Other responsibilities will include preparation and presentation of reports to sponsors, oral presentations at program reviews, supervision of students/postdocs assigned to support program, ensuring that ESH/QA policies are followed, and develop and maintain laboratory equipment and facilities.
The candidate is expected to have considerable knowledge of state-of-the-art lithium-ion cathode materials, as well as their preparation and modification via solid-state and wet-chemical synthesis; experience with coprecipitation reactors is a plus. Considerable skill in the physical analysis of materials, as well as the fabrication and electrochemical testing of cells, is required. Considerable skill in independently assessing and interpreting the results of the candidate’s own work as well as the work of others is required. Special consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in lithium- and manganese-rich materials, including their physical and electrochemical properties. In addition, experience with alternatives to standard lithium-ion materials, as well as sodium-ion, is a plus. An excellent record and knowledge of standard laboratory practices and safety procedures is a strict prerequisite. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
The level of knowledge required is typically achieved through a formal education in physics, chemistry, or materials science at the Ph.D. degree level with 3 to 5 years of experience; or the equivalent through practical application in a laboratory.
