Each store has a Cultural Council including representatives from each department. Associates chosen to represent their coworkers discuss ways to improve our company and serve our Customers better. For example, Cultural Councils have been central to updating our dress code and Associate discount policies, improving in-store recycling and strengthening communication between office and store Associates. Without our great people, we wouldn’t be where we are today!
Our hardworking Associates are the main reason for our continued growth. We thank our Associates every day for the great work they do, and we also set aside special days for recognition celebrations. To show Associates how valuable they are, we hold monthly appreciation days with fun themes, food and prizes, plus twice a year we have week-long celebrations. Who was Fred Meyer?
Fred G. Meyer (originally Frederick Grubmeyer) came to Portland, Oregon in 1908 when he was 22 years old. Drawing on his experience working for his family’s grocery business, Mr. Meyer began selling coffee from a horse-drawn cart to workers at farms and lumber camps. As he watched and listened to his Customers (always a proper noun to Mr. Meyer), he began planning a completely new kind of store.
